Mobile DVD Players - They keep getting smaller, have better images and features and more affordable.  Today's compact DVD players are so much better than they were just a few short years ago.  At J&R prices start around $100 and Wal-Mart has them in this price range as well.

Let's take a look at some features and why they may be important to the user.  Screen size starts around 2.5 inches and go up.  A 2.5 inch screen is probably too small for most and likely to be enjoyed by young children.  Some of the models with the very small screen only play mini DVDs so if you're interested in one of these small screen units, make sure you know what type of DVDs it will play.  Think about if a typical display is suitable or if you want a widescreen display.

Where and when you plan to watch DVDs is also important when choosing a compact DVD player.  If you plan to watch much away from a power source, then take a look at the battery life of the unit.  Some are a couple hours and others, like some Sony models, have a battery life of around 7 hours with their mobile DVD players.  Do you only need an AC adapter to recharge or do you also need a car adapter to charge and watch movies while traveling?

If you plan to watch videos that you burn with your PC, then look for a model that will read DVD+R and/or DVD-R.  If you want to listen to MP3 music files you burned on a CD, get a model that also will read MP3 files and CD-R and/or CD-RW discs.

Some of the better models have audio and video output to connect the player to speakers, headphones and even a TV.  This can be a nice feature if you wish to listen in private, like while on a plane, or if you don't have a home DVD player or even to hook up to the TV in your hotel room while traveling.  You can also find audio and video inputs on some models so you can plug in your camcorder to watch your home videos.  If you plan to use your new compact DVD player at home, think about getting a model with a remote control as well.  Some compact DVD players have optional TV tuners that you can hook up to watch TV on-the-go.
