Cordless Drills - What To Know and How to Buy - If Dad has a corded drill he most likely would like a cordless drill.  Unless, of course, the corded drill hasn't been used in 3 years after he drilled a nice 3/8" countersunk hole in the palm of his hand.  If this is the case, steer your thoughts to less dangerous gifts like compact DVD players or Wine of the Month Clubs.  If you think your Dad will be relatively safe with a cordless, take a look below as we go over some important and popular features to think about.  We won't dwell much on specific brands but rather the benefits and features that most cordless drills have.

Here's some features and benefits to consider when buying a cordless drill.

Delta Cordless DrillsVoltage - Most cordless drills are from 9.6 volts to 18 volts, depending on the manufacturer and its use.  The voltage is mostly important for the cordless tool's intended use.  The more heavy duty usage, the higher voltage drill should be considered.

Extra batteries and charger - Not all cordless drills come with chargers so if this is a new purchase, make sure the drill you select has a charger, unless you're replacing a broken or worn out drill.  If the drill will get much use, like for an entire day or so, think about getting an extra battery.

Keyless Chuck - This is an important feature and should be at the top of your list.  Being able to change bits without having to use a chuck key is a major convenience.

Torque Settings - Another important feature. This lets you select the amount of torque the drill will use.  This means you select how hard the drill will drill or turn something, like a screwdriver bit.  Too much torque and you can break things using a screwdriver bit.  Not enough torque and you may not be able to complet that drilling project.  Better cordless drills have this feature and it's another good one to keep high on your list.

Variable Speed - Also important. There's a couple ways to go here, multiple speed and truly variable speed.  Multiple speed is selecting from a number of different speeds, like 200 RPM or 1000 RPM and so on.  A "better" variable speed is one where the speed increases as you squeeze harder on the trigger.  This is preferred as it gives you more control and lets you start out at a fast speed and decrease as you finish drilling.  Regardless of the type of speed, make sure the drill is reversable.

Belt Clip - This is a useful feature but not a high priority one.  This is more useful if Dad works in construction or does a lot of home projects.  Most Dads won't likely use this much.

Bit Storage - Some cordless drill models have a built in bit storage feature.  This is handy since you can carry a number or bits around with you instead of putting them in your pocket or carrying a tool box around.

Carrying Case / Kit - This is important to think about as well.  If this is a gift, a carrying case and/or a kit is a good idea.  Many kits come with drill bits, screwdriver bits, lights that use the same battery as the drill or extra batteries.

A huge selection of cordless drills can be seen at Tool King.  They should have the model, brand and price you're looking for from new units to reconditioned.  Click here
