DVD Player SVCD VCD - In case you didn't already know, SVCD means Super Video CD and of course VCD means Video CD.  If Dad is still using that 300 pound, 3 foot long VCR home video recorder with the 6 flood lights on it and plays the tapes on that VCR player that's as big as a compact car, it's time for a major upgrade in technology.  You may have to convince him first so tell him DVDs are where VCRs were about, oh, 50 years ago.  If he has about 1,000 VCR tapes, think about a DVD/VCR combo player and recorder that he can use to copy those old tapes to DVDs.

SVCD DVD Player - There's quite a large selection of DVD players out there so how do you know what to buy or even look for? The first move is to think about what you want to do and how you will use it. Do you just want a simple DVD player that will only play store-bought DVDs? If so, your choices are easy since just about all players today will do this just fine.  Do you plan to copy video files from your computer and play them on your new DVD player?  Then you should look at models that will play SVCD and VCD.  This allows you to burn your video on a CD and play it on the player.  If you have a DVD burner then you may not even need this feature.  If you plan to burn your own DVDs then look for a player that will also play DVD+RW or DVD-RW depending on the type of DVDs you'll burn.

So do you need a dvd player svcd vcd?  Most people don't but this does give you the option of burning video files, like avi and mpeg, on a CD and then watching them on your DVD player.  If you need a DVD player that will also play your SVCD and VCD take a look at JandR, they have a large selection of DVD players and models with just about any combination of features you want.  If you need a SVCD DVD player, make sure the product description states this since most models don't have this feature.

So what else should you look for?  Again, what you look for depends largely on what you want to do or expect with a new DVD player.  Instead of telling you what you should look for, we'll take a look at some features so you can decide what you want or need.

DVD+R/RW, DVD-R/RW - This is important if you plan to watch any DVDs you burn yourself or borrow from someone who did.  Many computer burners will burn both + and - DVDs while most players that connect to your TV will burn either + or - format.  What this means is that if you have a +R DVD and your player will only read the -R format, you can't watch any +R format discs.

CD-R, CD-RW, MP3 - This is important if you plan to play music CDs that you burned.

JPEG Capability - With this feature, you can view your photo CDs on your TV.

Media Card Ready - We're now seeing units that have slots for memory cards, like those used in digital cameras, that let you view photos straight from the card to your TV.

DivX - If you have a number of movies on your PC in the DivX format, you can find some models that will play these videos as well.

Tivo - You can now get models with Tivo built-in.  Copy hours of TV programs to the Tivo units' hard drive then burn what you want to save to a DVD.

HDTV - Some models have HDTV capability for those who want it.

Recording (or burning) - If you ever want to record from your TV and make your own DVDs, then definitely look for this feature. If you have the proper cables you can copy your VHS tapes to DVD. If you wish to transfer your VHS tapes to DVD, a better choice would be DVD VHS players that will handle the transfer without having to figure out what cables you need and how to hook the two units together.  If you plan to transfer video from tape to disc, look for a one-touch dubbing feature.  This will let you put your tape in, put your disc in and hit one button to start the recording process.  This is surely a time saving feature if you have many tapes to transfer.

Multiple Discs - Most players today are single disc players but there are some models that will hold more than one disc at a time.

Special Effects - If these are important, make sure to check for these features like slow motion, zoom in/zoom out.

Parental Control/Child Lock - There a number of ways this is handled and the most common are requiring a password to view DVDs or even locking the DVD tray itself so discs can't be inserted while it's locked.

There are numerous technical options like what video output/input etc. but we won't address all those types of features in this article but rather give you an idea on common features to think about and look for in a DVD player SVCD VCD.
