Wine Lover Gift - Wine of the Month Club - Not all Dads love a good wine, notice I said wine and not whine. While there are many Dads who would love to receive the gift of wine, I don't personally know of any Dad who would like a gift of whine. In fact, he won't consider it a "gift" and I highly doubt he will thank you for whining at him.  And don't even think about a Whine of the Month either-while cheap it won't be appreciated.

If you think your Dad just may like a wine of the month club, here's some things to consider.  Like any good wine lover gift idea, the place to start is a little planning and thinking.  First off, does he even drink wine or has he lately expressed an interest in drinking wine?  If he does drink wine, does he have a preference like red or white?  Does he mention any specific wines?  If he drinks wine now, take a look at what he has in stock as this will give you an excellent idea of what he likes.

Not all wine of the month clubs are the same and just any membership may not be a good gift for the wine lover.  Some will feature products from U.S. wineries and others will feature selections from around the world.  Some plans let you choose white, red or both.  If he is into new and different wines look for a membership that offers more than just wine each month.  The better clubs will offer a newsletter with each selection that describes the wine of the month, news and information about the source of the wine, tasting and cooking tips.  These memberships are a more appreciated gift for the wine lover.  If he likes a certain month's selection he may want to buy more so find a plan that offers a discount to members.

How well, do you think, your Dad will enjoy this type of membership?  If you think he will but aren't 100% sure, pick a club that allows shorter memberships, like 3 month or even 1 month.  The minimum membership length is important to note.  It wouldn't be much of a wine lover gift to get him a 12 month membership to a club he won't appreciate or even like.  Does the seller offer more than one type of membership?

If you know your wines, see if the seller lists their past selections so you can see the quality of their picks.  See if their picks would agree with yours and if they're sending wine you aren't likely get at your local distributor.

Check their membership rules carefully and look for their delivery restrictions.   There are likely to be restrictions to which states they can ship to and this list may differ from different clubs.  So, if seller A doesn't ship to your state check out other clubs as there may be one who does ship to your state.  Likely, the shipment will need to be signed for by an adult so consider this as well.

Another important consideration is a guarantee of satisfaction. What will they do if you're not satisfied with your wine lover gift?  Can you cancel the membership?  Will they reimburse your club fee? Can you get a gift card with membership?  Is this important?

To summarize, here's what you should consider:
  • Type of wine, red or white
  • U.S., local or international wines
  • Any extras with membership, newsletter or gifts
  • Discounts for additional wine purchases
  • Minimum length of membership-1 month, 3 months, year
  • Different types of membership-starter, premium, etc.
  • If you know your wines, does seller list any previous selections?
  • Check shipping information and state restrictions
  • Do they have a guarantee?
  • Total cost with shipping

We hope this helps.  Like any gift idea, a gift for the wine lover in your life should be considered before charging out with your money in hand.  A very nice wine lover gift is a wine of the month club membership so choose wisely and make sure you get what he'll want and what you pay for.  If you're ready to look at a wine of the month club, take a look at Cellars Wine Club, they have some of the best features we saw in online wine cubs and are worth a good look.  Click here
